Sacred Waste

I was reading a really interesting article for work. It's about bodily waste products, and how throughout history, humankind has, for various reasons, made waste products into sacred articles. It raises the whole issue of what is "waste," and there was a whole section on placentas. It's all the rage in the US these days for couples to attribute special healing or spiritual qualities to their child's placenta, and I found this passage particularly amusing:

  1. Charming! I would be horrified if I asked someone, "Oh that's a cool design on your t-shirt, where'd you get it?" and they said "Oh, what this old thing? I made this from my wife's placenta."
